Peter LaNasa, M.D.Peter LaNasa, M.D.

Peter LaNasa, M.D., is a board certified radiation oncologist. Dr. LaNasa joined USMD Cancer Center after developing the Fort Worth CyberKnife Center into one of the most active programs internationally. His areas of sub-specialization include prostate cancer, breast cancer and radiosurgery. Since arriving at USMD Cancer Center in 2009, he has collaborated with our team of physicians to create the most complete prostate cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up program in the region. The radiation oncology department is equipped with the state-of-the-art linear accelerators, including the TrueBeam™ and Novalis TX™ radiosurgery systems, while staffing the department with experienced physicists, dosimetrists, therapists and nurses.

This comprehensive approach to a single diagnosis has led to improved care and has been extremely well received by patients and families. The focus for 2011 has been to take this same collaborative, focused, comprehensive approach to breast cancer. As of September 2011, women can now receive breast cancer screening, biopsy, surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, genetic testing and radiation therapy at a single location, while a nurse navigator carefully guides the breast cancer patient through the treatment and recovery process. The radiation oncology department has added Vision RT technology to the TrueBeam accelerator. This will provide for precise patient positioning and real time infrared imaging to assure the accuracy and safety of treatment for the breast cancer patient.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Dr. LaNasa received his medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed his residency in radiation oncology in New Jersey at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. For more than a decade, he directed radiation oncology programs in New York before relocating to Texas with his family.

"The introduction of high-speed computers and digital imaging has given us numerous advantages in treating cancer patients," said Dr. LaNasa. "Our goal at USMD Cancer Center is to offer patients the most powerful technology available to maximize cure rates and minimize side effects."

IMRT with Image Guidance and Radiosurgery with the
Varian TrueBeam™ and Novalis TX™

At the USMD Prostate Cancer Center, all patients are presented their treatment options as outlined by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines. Whether a patient presents with low, intermediate or high-risk prostate cancer, radiation therapy (IMRT with CT image guidance) is among the recommended treatments.

Over the past decade, technological advances have led to dramatic improvements in the delivery of radiation therapy. As always, the goal is to improve tumor targeting, while limiting the dose to nearby healthy tissue. At the USMD Prostate Cancer Center, only radiosurgical systems are utilized for radiation treatment. The Varian TrueBeam STx and Novalis TX systems are equipped to provide the most accurate movement, CT guidance for precise targeting and sophisticated beam shaping using RapidArc™ technology.

"It is essential that we offer patients the same technological and personal experience that I would want for my own family," says Peter LaNasa, M.D. "I truly believe we have achieved that. Our commitment to offer the [latest, safest and most successful treatments] to our patients is long term and both the Varian TrueBeam STx and Novalis TX will receive future technology upgrades and advances in technique as they become available."

USMD Prostate Cancer Center provides personable, experienced staff, attention to detail and punctuality, and state-of-the-art technology with the Varian TrueBeam STx and Novalis TX systems, surrounded in an aesthetically appealing, soothing and extremely organized department. Patient feedback has been outstanding.
