Video Testimonials about Prostate Cancer

Paul Ward Hansen

My family doctor sent me to Urology Associates and USMD after watching my PSA for years. Revealing a Gleason Score (4+3) the "USMD TEAM" made recommendations for me. After a small elevated score, drop, and spike a biopsy was suggested. They gave me several paths to follow and let me make my own decisions for the best. I had surgery at USMD South and my care was excellent. They say one in six men will have to make this decision. If you have to make this decision, there is no better TEAM to have on your side.

I made my first appointment at USMD Prostate Cancer Center, and I met my doctors, nurses and a patient navigator which is something I’ve never experienced before. I was impressed with the doctors from the get-go. The main thing that I liked about it is the name USMD Prostate Cancer Center, because that’s what I had and that’s what they dealt with. I felt like I would get all the attention I could because of that. I wouldn’t be just another disease at another hospital.

I had a patient navigator named Brenda, a very sweet young lady, I almost thought of her like a sister or a daughter. The great thing about it was I had somebody to go to with all of my questions that made me feel like they were all important and none of them were silly or minor. Just being able to stay in contact, I could give Brenda a call and she would answer the phone or get right back to me. For example, in the middle of the night I sent an email with a question and I received a good answer in my inbox the very next morning. So I was really thrilled at that aspect while I was being treated at the USMD Prostate Cancer Center.

Dr. Clif Vestal has been great to work with. He’s very personable. He puts me at ease. We relax, but I know there is always that 100% professionalism there when we do work. He was patient with my questions. I didn’t have a lot questions, because he offered good information from the start. I almost enjoy just visiting with him because he is such a personable fellow, but its great to know I am getting professional treatment from a great person.

At age 66, I was diagnosed with cancer. It was a good time for me for the fact that the technology in the industry had improved. I went to go visit USMD Prostate Cancer Center and was immediately impressed. The radiation equipment is there, the new Da Vinci robotic surgery is there, and so I took note of that, and when it was time to for me to select that doctor or select the center, I selected the USMD Prostate Cancer Center.

When I started sharing my situation with others, they would say, “Oh I’m sorry, are you going to get a second opinion?” I went “no,” well, why not? Because I already got my 1st, 2nd and 3rd opinion at USMD Prostate Cancer Center, why would I want to go anywhere else? These are the some people that said I should be going to John Hopkins or in Texas you have to go to MD Anderson or Mayo Clinic. No, we have a facility in Arlington that can meet all my needs.

I think what I was really concerned about having listened to my relatives and other friends, is what happens to those personal functions afterwards? Nothing. USMD Prostate Cancer Center did an amazing job. Those nerve endings around the prostate were saved and I function as a normal human being. You can still have those pleasure moments. A lot of people are hesitant to act promptly with prostate cancer, because they are scared of it interfering with their personal life. But this facility gives you choices, whether its radiation, sonic, the cryo-surgery, or the Da Vinci robotic surgery, they put things into perspective and help you on this major decision.

When I told my urologist my PSA level was high, he ran a test and explained to me that I had prostate cancer. He talked to me for a while and asked me to go see the USMD Prostate Cancer Center. When I got there I talked to Dr. Justin Lee and he said I’m not going to press you to do anything, but you have to make up your own mind. My wife and my son were a little upset and sad, but they were the ones that talked me into the operations. I was hesitant at first, but Dr. Lee made me feel real comfortable.

Dr. Lee did an incredible job. My wife is so excited about how well Dr. Lee did. When we went up to USMD after my surgery, they had a professional football player who was signing autographs and taking pictures. She said, “I don’t want to take a picture with the football player, I want to take a picture with Dr. Lee!”

What really stuck out was how good of care they took of me while I was there and after I was out the hospital. They treated me like I was a member of their family. You can go to a lot of hospitals and doctor's offices and not feel comfortable; I felt comfortable with them. Even when I go and have my physical and stuff like that, you feel right at home. You aren’t nervous or down, they cheer you up. I think its is the greatest place you can go and see for prostate cancer.

Oscar Patton
Retired US Army Veteran and Government Contractor

From the time you walk into the receptionist, everybody gives you the feeling that you are welcome. The first thing I heard was, “We’re here to take care of you, and our sole interest is to make sure that you are taken care of.” There was not one person that portrayed anything different every time I went there. So that tells me that everybody is watching each other, which shows they really care.

Dr. Bevan-Thomas makes it a point to talk to you. The first connection I had with him, how he explained things, how I was handled, I just immediately had the trust that this was the right guy. He said, "I’ll do everything I can to protect the nerve around the prostate to think of the quality of life in the future."

My patient advisor was very helpful. She answered any question I had and was always open to my call. She said, “Mr. Patton, I have been here for over ten years. I would like to tell you that I am taking my time with this and everybody gets the same treatment. We want to make sure that we do everything the best. By the way. you're in good hands. You're in one of the best hands of any medical team or medical staff you could ever be in.” If I had to recommend anyone, I would recommend USMD Prostate Cancer Center in Arlington, because they show that they care and they are looking out for the best interest of the patient.

When I first found out I had prostate cancer, the exact date was January 24th, 2011, I was extremely nervous. There was a lot of anxiety and uncertainty. My urologist had made me aware that I had prostate cancer, and he immediately referred me to USMD Prostate Cancer Center in Arlington, as well as to Dr. Justin Lee.

Here today, three weeks and one day later, I had prostate cancer surgery, a prostatectomy. I’m in very good spirits, good shape and God has worked a tremendous amazing miracle on me. I’m grateful. I’m grateful for having the best doctor. There is not a better surgeon out there than Dr. Justin Lee. I truly believe that God molded and shaped that man, gave him the knowledge, gave him the understanding, gave him the Godly ways, and gave him a hospital that is so people oriented they wait on you hand and foot. They express love and caring that is so genuine. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity, a better experience than I just went through at USMD Prostate Cancer Center.

Think about your kids, think about them being raised without a dad because you didn’t go get screened, that’s a foolish decision. The key is early detection, treatment and you can defeat prostate cancer. I’m a proven fact, sitting here today and I’m very thankful.

When I first found out I had prostate cancer, I had visions of everything coming to an end. Once this was over with and I had my surgery, I felt like a million bucks. Now everything is working, everything! Now I’m 100% healthy. I’m an avid motorcycle rider of all kinds, and I’m back on my motorcycles again.

Firstly, when I got to the USMD Prostate Cancer Center, I was taken by the hand and lead through the process. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful, and I was very comfortable with the treatment I received there. I had opted for the Da Vinci robotic surgery because it is a less invasive surgery, and I had very little discomfort. The amount of pain that I had was not much more than a bellyache, honestly. I actually went into the hospital on a Monday and I was home on Tuesday morning and went back to work two weeks later.

I do have a wife and a family. Guys need to get it through their heads they have got to go get checked from 40 years old and on. It could be a lifesaver, you could save your own life and your family needs you.
