The Other Side of Prostate Cancer Treatment

The day you hear the words, “You have prostate cancer,” will probably be one of the worst days of your life. Your diagnosis may usher in feelings of fear, sadness and uncertainty. We understand. We never like telling a man and his family that they have a stealthy killer in their midst. Just remember, the prostate cancer brotherhood is large and strong. Today, there are 2.9 million survivors in the United States alone.

Along with a variety of state-of-the-art treatments that are very effective at destroying prostate cancer cells, one of the best medicines we know of is hearing from men on the other side of treatment. As they’ve let us know on our Facebook page and website, life after prostate cancer treatment is good—very good. We’re happy to share some of their stories with you.

“I am 10 years cancer-free this week thanks to USMD and Dr. David Lee. My doctors kept saying you don't need a PSA test until age 50, and my digital exams were always normal. At 48 I said, “Run the PSA anyway just to get a baseline.” My score was 4.2. Biopsy was done next and prostate cancer found. Had robotic prostatectomy at USMD on March 15, 2005 (five days after turning 49). I have been PC free—no detectable PSA since then. Glad I followed my gut and got a PSA earlier rather than waiting till age 50.”
Paul Burek, March 11, 2015

“I had my post-opt consult with my surgeon, Dr. Bevan-Thomas, yesterday. Debi and I were overwhelmed by his comment that I was cancer free! I want to give a shout out to Dr. Bevan-Thomas, his staff, the nurses, and the wonderful staff and facilities at USMD Hospital in Arlington, Texas. Thank you very much.”
David Kerr, January 2015

“I had a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy 4.9 years ago by Dr. Lee. A great surgeon and a great guy. I was 49 at the time of diagnosis. Getting zeros so far.
Dennis Dupuis Rusty, November 2014

“The whole process has been a blessing. Not only did I find the prostate cancer early and get it treated, I’m not carrying a bag of dog food around my waist anymore. I dropped 60 pounds. My cardiologist and my family doctor are both giddy about my weight loss. I don’t take blood pressure medicine any more. My allergist is happy. Unless something goes wrong, I won’t see Dr. LaNasa again—which is kind of sad. It’s kind of crazy, but I’m going to miss seeing everyone at USMD.”
Jim Cox. August 2014

“Dean’s PSA is less than zero after his robotic prostatectomy! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate Dr. Bevan-Thomas. He’s a very rare individual. I think he can look at people and feel their pain. He knows how to reassure people—and he’s very honest. We appreciate that he didn’t look at us like ‘those two little old senior citizens are going to die anyway.’ We felt like we were actually seen as individuals.”
Lou Ann Radke, August 2014

“Dr. Lee is the best surgeon I’ve ever had. And I’ve undergone several surgeries—including an aortic aneurism. This was the easiest surgery I’ve had. Essentially, I’ve been cancer free from the day of the surgery four years ago. No side effects or residuals or anything.”
Frank Peugh, August 2014

“Dr.Bevin-Thomas did an outstanding job for me. I could not be happier with the results.” Sam Allmond May 15, 2014

“PSA results today were undetectable. YES!!!”
Mike Owens, May 2014

“USMD rocks!!!! And Dr. Lee is amazing at his job doing robotic surgeries. My husband is a survivor—six years cancer free. I cannot thank him enough for saving my husbands life and our connection to one another."
Judy Richardson, April 2014

“I had prostate cancer and underwent radiosurgery. My last PSA test was undetectable. All of the tests and trips to USMD were worth the time. Thanks to a great team of doctors!!”
Ken Smithson, January 2013

“I'm thankful that through my regular prostate exam and PSA testing I had an early detection of PC resulting in DaVinci Robotic Surgery. My surgeon says that I only have a 0.03% chance of reoccurrence of PC. Guys be sure to have regular DREs and PSA tests. It could very well save your life.
Kent Bailey, January 31, 2013

“Now I’m a survivor and looking forward to a long life!”
Dan Groves, October 2012

“Two-and-a-half years after surgery and I’m clean and everything works properly. Thanks USMD.”
Louis Gianalva, October 2012

“I was lucky and beat it and am in perfect health for two years now. I inadvertently accelerated mine with growth hormone and steroid use. I got a second chance.”
Mike Bossie, September 2012
