Rich Bevan-Thomas, M.D.
Rich Bevan-Thomas, M.D., Medical Director of USMD Prostate Cancer Center, is at the forefront of the rapidly growing fields of robotic surgery and cryosurgery.
Robotic surgery is an advanced, high-tech laparoscopic procedure that offers many advantages over
traditional surgery, says Dr. Bevan-Thomas. He specializes in performing the robotic prostatectomy, a
minimally invasive procedure that involves removing the prostate gland using the da Vinci surgical robotic
system.
In 2002, Dr. Bevan-Thomas was one of the first physicians to perform robotic surgery when the technique
was introduced in the U.S. At the time, he was in private practice in San Ramon, California, and served as
chief of surgery at San Ramon Medical Center in California. He was recruited to USMD Prostate Cancer
Center in 2007.
Additionally, Dr. Bevan-Thomas is a member of the USMD Prostate Cancer Center Cryosurgery team.
Cryosurgery incorporates the use of slim probes known as 'cryoprobes' that periodically deliver cycles
of extremely cold and warm temperatures to repeatedly freeze and thaw cancerous cells within and
surrounding the prostate gland– ultimately destroying the cancerous cells.
A graduate of Duke University, Dr. Bevan-Thomas received both a master’ s degree in anatomy and his
medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in urologic
surgery at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center and the renowned MD Anderson Cancer
Center, also in Houston. In 2002, he received two top honors in his field; the Pfizer Scholar in Urology and
the Gerald G. Murphy Scholar in Urology.
Dr. Bevan-Thomas looks forward to continuing to remain on the leading edge of robotic surgery and
cryosurgery at USMD Prostate Cancer Center. He expects to begin offering patients the latest clinical trials
in prostate cancer treatment and to continue his interest in teaching and serving as a physician proctor and
instructor in robotic surgery.
Dr. Bevan-Thomas is a resident of Southlake with his wife and three children. |
